Professor Gavin Don – FRSA

Gavin Don is an entrepreneur, corporate financier and Visiting Professor of Entrepreneurial Finance at the University of Edinburgh’s Management School. Through his investment company, Equitas, Gavin specialises in all aspects of Entrepreneurial Finance. Among these he helps young companies grow by advising them on strategy and finance, by developing new investment techniques and vehicles, and by investing in and starting young companies as a business angel and entrepreneur. Gavin is also an acknowledged expert on strategy and tactics for growing innovative companies with particular emphasis on the problem of driving sales.
Gavin has provided expert evidence to the Scottish Parliament on entrepreneurial finance and advises Scottish, UK and European institutions on policies, problems and solutions for the young company environment. He is a non-executive director of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, in addition to being an honorary lecturer with Scotland’s leading academic entrepreneurship faculty, the Hunter Centre (Strathclyde University), and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts. Gavin is also a regular contributor in the media on young company issues, and was the founder of Young Company Finance.
Gavin graduated with an honours degree in Law and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Edinburgh. He began his financial career in the corporate finance division of a London merchant bank, Hambros, working on financial transactions from £5-£500 million. As part of a team, Gavin structured and executed complex financial transactions including business sale and purchases, fundraisings, reconstructions and privatisations.
Gavin’s interests include politics, sailing and travel. He is married and has two children.
