Margaret Mitchell – MSP
““Through its Scottish Parliamentary committees, our country has the ability not just to influence or change proposed EU legislation but to establish itself as a force for pragmatism and commonsense””
Margaret Mitchell was elected as the Conservative List MSP for Central Scotland in 2003. She was justice spokesperson and a member of the Justice 1 Parliamentary Committee from 2003 to 2007. She is currently the Convener of the Scottish Parliament’s Equal Opportunities Committee.
Margaret was educated at Coatbridge High and has a BA degree from Open University and an LLB from Strathclyde University. She has held various public appointments including serving as a Justice of the Peace and as a Non-Executive Director of the former Hairmyres and Stonehouse NHS Trust.
She taught for many years before leaving the profession to study law. Margaret has also been a councillor and the conservative group leader on Hamilton District Council. Prior to being elected to the Scottish Parliament she was special adviser to David McLetchie MSP and James Douglas-Hamilton MSP. She has extensive experience working with constituency associations as the Party’s former Local Government Chairman. Margaret has held a number of party positions as the spokesman for women’s issues and the depute education spokesman. She was elected to the Party’s Scottish Executive 2002 and served till her election to Holyrood.
Following the 2007 election Margaret decided not take a spokesmanship in order to concentrate her efforts on representing her Central Region constituency especially in light of the Scottish parliamentary results which meant she was the sole Conservative MSP returned to cover ten constituencies. However she remains extremely active in the Parliament and in addition to holding the convenership of the Parliamentary Equal Opportunities Committee, one of the two convenerships held by the Conservatives, she is involved with several cross party groups as the Convener of the Dyslexia CPG and Vice Convener of the Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CPG). She is also a member of the Scottish Economy Cross Party Group.
Margaret is married to Henry, a Chartered Accountant and the Conservative councillor for the Bothwell and Uddingston Ward where the couple live.
