John Purvis is one of Scotland’s most experienced and respected MEPs. Having served in the European Parliament for Mid Scotland and Fife from 1979 to 1984, John returned to the Parliament in 1999. He is currently the Vice Chairman of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and a Member of the Committee of Inquiry into Equitable Life. John is also a Member of the Delegation to the Mashreq countries (Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon), a Member of the Delegation to Iran, a Substitute Member of the Industry, Research and Energy Committee, and a Substitute Member of the Delegation to the Gulf States, including Yemen.

Born in St Andrews, Fife, John is the eldest son of a farming family. He was educated at Glenalmond and St Andrews University, graduating MA (Hons) in Moral Philosophy and Political Economy. John also served in the Scots Guards from 1956-58.

John started his career in banking by working for First National City Bank in London, New York and Milan before becoming Treasurer of Noble Grossart in Edinburgh between 1969 and 1973. Since 1973 John has owned a St Andrews-based financial consultancy, which focuses on marketing and finance and business development in Europe. John speaks both Italian and French. He owns a farm in East Fife where he lives with his wife, Louise. They have three grown-up children.
